Chapter 8

THE next week and a half was remarkably quiet. His project meetings went well, showing excellent progress. The European accountants had come up with some issues, and Michael had worked with them to make sure they'd get the information they would need from the system to do their work, and they'd gone back to their offices with smiles on their faces. They'd also identified two additional requirements that would require reports to be built. Michael worked with store operations to design the reports and sent the completed user requirements to the development staff back in the States, sending Curtis a copy along with an explanation. Things like this came up all the time in projects, especially once the user community really started to think about the ramifications of the project and how it would affect their daily work. Michael always tried to get them involved early, but it always took time for them to really think of all the possibilities. He kept expecting a phone call or some response from Curtis for most of the week, but nothing came. It was the kind of thing that Curtis always seemed to pounce on as a source of criticism, but all Michael got was quiet. Granted, he wasn't going to complain, not in the least--especially since on top of work going well, Stephan's and his tentative explorations were proving quite exciting.

Wednesday, however, was a completely different matter. All had remained quiet, and Michael's project continued progressing well as he collected updates from the various teams in preparation for the weekly project meeting. But about three in the afternoon, he received a phone call from Curtis bombarding him with questions. What surprised him was that Curtis seemed conciliatory. "I know the warehouse consolidation wasn't your project, but would you take a look at the documentation and let me know what you think? I understand it's going to be audited, and I'd like a second set of eyes on it before the auditors get their hands on it. Don't change anything, but let me know what you find."

"Sure. I'll look at it tonight," Michael answered, without thinking much of it. Curtis was being nice, and Michael hoped by doing him a favor, he could get on Curtis's good side. That is, if one actually existed--the jury was still out on that.

Curtis became quiet, and Michael heard the door close and the phone shift off speaker. "Could you look at it right away and get back to me in an hour or so? It's kind of important."

"Okay, but it takes more time than that to really dig into the documentation. I'll see what I can find." Michael wondered just what was going on, but this wasn't his project, so at least he wasn't on the firing line, and he'd do what he could to help if there was an issue. "Let me get started, and I'll call you in an hour with anything I can find." Michael hung up and logged into the project repository.
